Narrative in media in a way of telling a story through a few different theories. Such as, Propp, Todorov and Levi stauss. Propp theory is 8 different character roles such as:
- The villain
- The hero (not always good but always carries the story along, the central character and not always male)
- The donor (who provides an object with some special property)
- The helper (who helps the hero)
- The princess (the reward for the hero and object of the villain’s schemes)
- Her father (who rewards the hero)
- The dispatcher (who sends the hero on his way)
- The false hero
Todorov theory is disrupted by issue to cause disequilibrium then more events take place before a new equilibrium is established. Many filmmakers show that there will always be a sense in the film of what life was like before the problem came along and therefore what the characters can return to if they can only sort the problem out. Many filmmakers use this theory, it’s seen in many movies.
For my seven deadly sins project being photography, i think the best theory out of the three would be Levi Strauss binary opposition. The different examples do give me a lot of freedom with them.
Examples of Good vs evil, Black and white, peace vs war, man vs nature and strong vs weak with levi strauss theory.

Each of these photographs tell a story.
Good vs evil
- one side of the picture is very colourful and peaceful
- The other side is burning which could suggest a few more binary examples. For example, Bad vs good and War and peace
Black vs white
- The persons face is covered
- The black is very defined
- The lines on their face define her body
War vs peace
- The photo shows peace as family represents peace
- The war could be related the black and white picture, as colour could represent happiness.
Good looking vs ugly
- In the reflection of the mirror that shows a version of her with a long nose. This could represent A witch as typically stereotypical witches have long noses. She would see herself in that way.
- It could be how she sees herself or what others do
Man vs nature
- Power lines are man made
- the trees are taking over the man made object that isn’t supposed to be there.
Genre – Horror

What is genre?
Genre is used as well as vital for many things in the creative media industry. There are genres in magazines, adverts, films, television dramas, video games, websites, newspapers, music and radio programmes. If a media producer wants to gain a certain audience for a genre they will need understand the genres codes and conventions. Many audience’s prefer a certain genre so it’s important for people making these things to have a good understanding of what genre they want to use. The images above show examples of what genre I would like to use my seven deadly sins project. These images show what genre I’m going for and also techniques and props I will be using.
